We often receive questions about computers so we though we should create a section for computer tips and things to know when you are in a computer store looking to buy your next computer.

Let's face it. Buying a new computer can put you against some difficult decisions. Should you buy a PC or a Mac? How do you select the right computer for a ten-year-old? What are all these terms associated with computers mean? And how do you know you're getting the right stuff? To make your computer shopping spree a little easier we've decided to put some tips that we hope will answer all these questions and more.

PC Vs. MAC
PC versus Mac is the one of the first question that computer buyers face when they purchase a new computer, so don't feel alone. Now it is true that there has been a little negative activity around Apple (MAC Computers) in the past, but it is an enormous company with millions of loyal followers and it is thriving by focusing on its historical strengths of graphics and design. Now if you are a graphic artist or graphic designer, the MAC is a great choice. In addition, iMacs are excellent for first-time computer users who want an easy way to surf the Internet. It has a very user-friendly interface and comes in six different "flavors."

Price!?
OK. Now before we get into bits, bytes, Megahertz (MHz) and other computer-related terms, let's talk money. One of the biggest fears that computer buyers have is obsolescence -- (will the computer they buy today be useless in a year?) The best way to protect yourself is to buy the best computer you can afford. Skimping to save $300 to $600 will cut short the life of your computer dramatically. Follow this advice and you'll enjoy your system for at least two and a half years (probably longer!) before having to spend a dime on upgrades.

Some other tips:

  • Don't let a computer salesman woo you or confuse you with hi-tech terms and fancy lingo.
  • Understand exactly what you're getting, how much you're paying, and why.
  • Talk to friends about their computers and how reliable they are.
