Website Content

Having professional design and programming for your website is only half of the battle; a sucessful website will need efficient and effective content. The text on your website is a reflection of you and your business. You should write the text yourself to give it a personal touch. If you do not have strong writing skills it would be a good idea to hire a professional to edit your text but the messages on each page should come from you.

What text should I have on my website?

  • Homepage
Your homepage should welcome visitors and immediatly explain who you are and what you do. If you are a wedding photoprapher in Phoenix Arizona, your homepage should communicate this to the visitor. A person who enters your homepage from a search engine should be told what you can do for them and what geographical areas you serve. Some people are apprehensive about doing business with a company they found on the internet. Try to set potential customers minds at ease. Describe your credentials and what makes your business better than the competition. Customer testimonials can also be used to prove your credibility.
  • About Us
Most people choose to create an "About Us" or "Company History" page for their website. Before entering into a business relationship with someone, many people like to learn about the company they will be dealing with. An about is page gives you the opportunity to tell your personal story and better introduce your business to the world.

How much content should I put on my website?
Are you wondering how much content and how many pages you should put on your website? The answer is: As much informative content as you can get your hands on. A large quantity of good quality content will do great things for your website. The visitors on your pages will appreciate the information and it will also give the impression that your are a knowledgeable professional in your field. A great deal of content will also help with your search engine placement and bring in new visitors regularly. See search engine optimization for more details. If you have a business selling car parts it would be a good idea to have pages of tips for auto maintenance. If you have text on your site explaining how to fix an alternator, someone may enter a related search into a search engine (i.e. alternator repair tips). If your page has alternator tips, you may rank high in the search engine. Your direct target market will be reading your pages for advice and you can promote your products to them.

Professional Copy Writing or Editing and Proof reading:
There are definitely right ways and wrong ways to write text for a website. You should always get your frields and family to edit and proof read your writing to make sure it is easy to understand and has no spelling or grammatical errors. Be sure to get someone who has no knowledge or experience in your field to read your content to make sure a layman can understand everything. If you are having difficulties making the text sound professional, consider hiring a professional copy writer.
