What is website hosting?
For your website to be available so people all over the world can view the pages 24/7, the files that make your up your site need to be
available on a server at all times. Web Hosting is renting space for your site on a company's server. Web hosting is an expense that is
paid monthly and price varies from company to company and is dependant on how much disk space and bandwidth you will need.
Choosing a website host.
With thousands of companies offring web hosting services, how do you decide which hosting company is best for you? Do not select the
cheapest web host you com find because quite often you will get what you pay for and a cheap host would cause you problems.
Consider the following facts when selecting a website host:
- Do the website host have reliable technical support both online and via the phone? Try to call the hosting company
before you sign up for a hosting package. Be sure you can get someone on the phone in case you have problems in the future.
- Are the servers reliable? You want to make sure the website host's servers do not go down frequently. When your
website's server is having problems, your website will be down and potential customers will not be able to access your pages. All
website hosts will brag about having high uptimes so ask friends and other website owners who they host their website with and how
reliable the service is.
- Compare prices of different companies, but remember not to just select the lowest price. Saving 5$ per month could
cost you hundreds or thousands if your website host is not reliable.
- How much space and bandwidth do you need? What other hosting features do you need to have on your site online?
