Where to place keywords for top search engine placement
When writing text for your website you should keep in mind who your target market is and what they will be looking for on the internet.
The keywords you put on each page should reflect what you think your target market will enter as a search into search engines. If you are
a hairdresser, serving Halifax, Nova Scotia, some of the keywords you will want to add to your pages would be:
- hairdresser
- Halifax
- Nova Scotia
You shold try to avoid agressively coding for too many keywords on one page. For example, if the hairdresser in Halifax
also offers hair extension services, it would be most effective to create a new page promoting hair extensions and placing the keywords hair
extensions throughout the page.
Keywords and phrases for your target search topics should be placed in the following spots throughout your page:
- Title Tags
A title tag appears at the to of a browser when on a web page and also appears as the link in search engine listings. In the code of a site
the title tag appear as follow:
<title>Title of the web page</title>
Your title tag should have words that you want to be ranked high in search engines. If you are an accountant in Boston named Jim Smith, a
good title tag for one of your pages may be "Boston Accountant - Jim Smith". Make sure to have different titles for each page to
optimize more keywords for top search engine placement.
- Description tags
Always include a description tag to describe your page. The description tag appear as follow:
<meta name="Description" content="Description of the page">
This provide a custom description text that search engines will show when the page is retreived in a search. Make sure it's short
and as accurate as possible to the page's content.
- Keyword tags
Always include a keywor tag to list the important keywords of your page. The keyword tag appear as follow:
<meta name="Keywords" content="Keywords, for, the, page">
This provide the list of keywords that the search engine will index and list you page under. Make sure you are using these
keywords on your page so that they are relevant to the page's content. Also separate each search term with a comma.
- Header Tags
Search engines like Header tags. Web design software will have an option for creating header tags. If you are working with the code of
the page a header would be written like this:
<h1>Your header message goes here</h1>
In general the header tags are used to display a title at the top of a page. Search engines consider the words between the opening
and closing of a header to be very important.
- Body of the page
Your keywords and phrases should also appear throughout the body of your page. It is particularly important to have the keywords you are
targeting in the first paragraph of the page.
- Text links
Each page on your website should be accessible by clicking a text link on other pages of the website. The text you use as a link to these
pages is known as anchor text. Anchor text should include important keywords when possible.
- Links from other sites
Links from other websites to your pages (also known as backlinks) dramatically improve your search engine placement. Whenever possible
it is helpful if these text links contain the keywords you are targeting.
