Pros of Buying into a Franchise include:

  • Brand awareness
A pro of buying into a franchise is the business already has an established brand name.
  • Pooled Advertising
When you buy into a franchise you may receive benefits from poked advertising. If the franchises head office spends money on advertising, all of the franchise owners will benefit from this increased exposure.
  • Group Purchasing Efficiency
If you buy into a franchise you would likely benefit from group purchasing. For example, if you buy into a submarine sandwich franchise, they will already have established relationships with suppliers and there will likely be a discount because of this relationship.
  • Reduced Risk
Because a franchise is already following a proven and established business plan they are often less risky than non franchise business.

Cons of buying into a Franchise include:

  • Strict Operational Requirements
When buying into a franchise you should be prepared to follow the rules and regulations of the head office.
  • Beware of weak franchises
Not all franchises are strong. Some franchises do not advertise or train well. Do your research and pick a winner.
  • Share the hardships
When you are a franchise owner you will share the hardships of the entire franchise. If the franchise is a hamburger franchise and someone half way across the country gets sick from eating one of the burgers, your business will suffer from the negative publicity.
  • Lack of Creative Control
When buying into a franchise you should be aware that you will not always be in control of your decisions. If you want to take a risk or offer a new product or service, you will need to get clearance from head office.
