Domain registration is purchasing a web address for your business. A web address is also known as a domain name. Domain names
are usually purchased on a per year basis. You should not be spending more than $10 USD for one year of domain registration.
Registersite.com has a basic domain registration that is $10 USD
per year and their site is very user friendly. If you shop around you will find sites that register domains for more and slightly
less.
Domain extensions
All web address must end with a .com, .net or other extensions. There are now over 40 extensions you can end your domain with. Most
people try to end their address with a .com but this can be very difficult because most good .com names have already been registered.
Finding an available domain name
Before purchasing a domain name you will need to find one that is available (not already registered by another person or company). To
check for domain name availability visit any domain registration website and use their domain search tool. Simply enter the domain name
you wish to purchase and the site will tell you if the name is available or unavailable.
Selecting a good domain name
A domain name is part of the identity of your business and should be considered as part of your brand name. The following points should be
considered when choosing your domain name:
- Number of characters
Try not to have a long domain name. People will have to type your web address into their browser and a long name can be difficult to
remember and annoying to type.
- Catchy
A domain name should be easy to remember. If you mention your website to a potential customer or if they see it on an advertisement you
want them to easily remember your domain name once they are at home in front of their computers.
- Email Addresses
Your web address will also be part of your email address (ie. yourname@yourdomain.com). Consider what your email address will be when
selecting a domain name.
Once you have a domain name chosen and registered you will need to purchase web hosting.
